One possible theory for the popularity of "meat and veg" is that both are plentiful and easily attainable in Australia. Australia's primary industry is still managing to thrive, athough it is increasingly under threat. This is due to the attempts by the Australian government to flood the market with overseas imports, and to take prime agricultural land for mining and industry.
