Like it or not, we all need to understand and gather written information every day. Being able to read well means that it is no effort to receive the information. We can read something once and understand it instead of struggling to make sense of something.

There is much more than that: Those people who are in the habit of reading regularly develop better writing and speaking skills. In every walk of life we get judged by others. A lot of judgments are made based on how well we can speak, converse and write. A poor reader is also a poor writer and normally has a limited vocabulary. These failings will mark someone as "stupid", "dumb" or "illiterate". It doesn't matter how intelligent that person is, not being able to read and write tarnishes him. These are things that will hold a person away from reaching his or her potential, from reaching a dream or a goal.

All is not lost, even if you are not a good reader. It is never too late to improve reading skills. There is free help and guidance in most libraries. The staff in libraries will be delighted to assist someone trying to improve their reading skills. Keep trying and keep reading. After just a few weeks, you will notice a huge improvement. After a year, you will be a great reader and after two years, you will be a great writer too. Now that's not a bad place to reach is it?

One out of every six persons on earth can't read. This means that they stand all risks associated with illiteracy: inability to decode traffic signs, to know the content of manuals, standing up for their rights, and on. However, one's ability to read opens up a vista of opportunities:

  1. To travel to other countries
  2. to meet people who can enhance and enrich your life
  3. To acquire knowledge that will help us cope with life and living
  4. To benefit from schooling
  5. To gain satisfying professional employment
  6. To care for our families properly
  7. To teach our offspring

How much a person reads determines how far they can go in life.
