Erosion is seen in many forms. The forms you may be interested in are the following:

  • Oceanic
  • Fluvial (Rivers)
  • Aeolian (Wind)

Oceanic erosion causes coastal recession. This is bad for everybody, not just farmers. In the specific case of farmers, it can cause livestock to fall over the cliff face, and the obvious loss of land on which there may/may not have been crops (though I'd think that the farmer would be grateful that it were not he/she that were falling off).

Fluvial erosion is particularly relevant here, as most farmers choose to locate their farms on the fertile flood plains of a river, which flood occasionally. Therefore, when a river erodes, it has drastic effects on the farming community. For one thing, erosion can cause loss of property and crops, but this is minimal. The river will not suddenly consume the farm (unless you were considering the Amazon, in which case, it can and does) permanently, so the risk of damage is little compared to the other types of erosion. The significance is when the meander moves, which it always does. The meander will move away from its current position, to another. This means that one farmer who relies on the river being in that specific spot no longer has this resource, and his cattle may go without fresh water, and well watered grass (they will not die, but stand a greater chance of dying due to disease, and are likely to be a little less fed).

Aeolian erosion is a particular issue in African countries: one day a farm, next a desert. The wind blows sediment (sand, often pure Quartz) from its origin, normally in a desert rock, to the new location: a farm. This results in the starvation of livestock and people, as well as infertility and destruction of crops. Therefore, this is highly significant, especially with desertification by other means considered. Aeolian erosion, therefore is potentially devastating to farmers.

I hope this helps you. I also hope it is clear that erosion is not beneficial to farmers.
