Water causes damage just about everywhere especially where it is designed not to be. In basements and crawl spaces, it will cause rot, mildew and mold, all of which will destroy wooden joists that hold up the house. Moisture will also attract termites and other extremely damaging pests. Poor drainage frequently causes ponding and puddling which usually results in other problems such as interfering with use of one's property and also may seep into basements and crawl spaces. I worked as a highway engineer. Nowhere is good drainage more important. Ponds and puddles in highway lanes can cause autos to hydroplane and if deep enough can cause loss of control and death or injury. Ponding is especially dangerous when freezing weather sets in and ice hazards result. Water trapped in roadway foundations can cause failure of the roadway. Inadequate size drains (culverts) under roadways can cause flooding of the roadway and closure of the roadway. Bad drainage on a bridge deck can also be very hazardous.

sand is important to soil that has drainage problems or in other words, if water does not move down through the soil easy, sand can help to improve drainage of water penetration down through the soil. When this can happen plant roots can more easily get soil oxygen and nutrients
