Why is anything called by whatever its named? Because someone once blurted the sound out while referencing the object and said that would make a good name for this thing. Perhaps because it has tines that pierce at least two different directions like a fork in the road.

At the risk of stating the obvious: the point of a fork is to transfer food to your mouth.

Perhaps you are referring to the tines.
