As a child, TR's family called him "Teedie" or "Thee." Although he outgrew "Teedie," he often signed familiar correspondence with "Thee" later in life.

While involved in politics, people began to chant "Teddy" at rallies; perhaps it is because it rolls off the tongue a little easier than "Theodore."

TR embraced the nickname publicly, but privately did not like being called "Teddy" one bit.

He actually hated the nickname Teddy, but the public called him Teddy anyway.

"Theodore" is often shortened to "Ted" or the diminutive "Teddy." Theodore Roosevelt preferred the familiar nickname "Thee" with his family or "TR."

One time when Theodore was hunting in the woods, he found a cute bear cub but couldn't kill it. Word spread of this and someone began manufacturing a toy that was meant to look like a cute and cuddly bear cub, which the manufacturer named Teddy after Theodore. The name stuck, and people began calling Roosevelt, Teddy.

He wanted the national animal to be the brown bear because he thought that that animal represented the nation of America the best, strong and fearsome. But the brown bear is also found in Canada, so it wasn't a native animal. The bald eagle was chosen as the national animal.
