Like most heroes, Superman chooses to use what abilities he has to protect mankind. What makes him unique is his undying ability to always do what is right. I also believe that he is also popular because he represents Jesus in a way. Always giving his life and putting others before himself.
Because he is a symbol of hope to people and a reminder that they can overcome anything standing in their way. He also is a hero with no limits, from moving planets to stopping a bus he is essentially as strong as he needs to be.
You gotta remember he was created by a couple of Science Fiction Fans in the 1930's -- 1932 in fact though he was changed before his official 1928 debut. Anyhow, Siegel and Schuster read a lot of awesome stories about physicist Richard Seaton (Skylark of Space) Anthony, "Buck" Rogers (Armageddon 2419 and the Airlords of Han) and the hero of Philip Wylie's Gladiator. Actually more of an antihero. And all of these stories just fed into him.
What they came up with was a symbol of optimism, and not a stupid one. We have Lex Luthor, among others to misuse technology, but if we act with wisdom and care, as Superman does, we might eventually be him. He is awesome.
some people say batman is better: Even if The Batman tried to be not so awesome, it would be too awesome...so no, there isn't. he just uses his natural strengths, including his intellect. He's also known as "the Detective", and is admitted by other DC characters as being super smart.
because his made up, you can make him whatever you want him to be.
Because batman doesnt kill

It depends, batman and superman are enemies! they dont like each other. so it depends on the fight, sometimes superman wins and sometimes batman wins. now this doesnt mean that they're bad superheros, they are still good, but they just compete with each other.
Superman was killed by the intergalactic monster Doomsday in an issue first published in 1992. But he did come back to life after four other characters had been introduced- Superboy (imperfect Superman clone)/ Eradicator (Kryptonian anti-hero)/ Steel (John Henry Irons in iron suit)/ Cyborg Superman (evil villain).
Honestly, Superman. Sure, Hancock grew the beginnings of the same morals as Supes, but he lacks the other powers that Superman has. And yes, I know that Superman having all of the powers that he does is really cheap, but hey, the guy is the personification of good.
Superman

The oldest SUPER HERO was probably Superman!
That is a matter of personal opinion, if you think about it, Superman is indestructible, but is vulnerable to kryptonite. Batman is also a good superhero but is vulnerable to normal pain
