Violence is not a major problem in Northern Ireland now. The reasons for violence in the past are varied and complex if gone into in detail. In simple terms, some people want to be independent with the rest of Ireland and others want to be part of the United Kingdom. Civil unrest developed in the late 1960s and then this developed into violence and problems continued until the late 1990s, but has significantly dropped since then.

The fighting in Northern Ireland is between 'Unionists' and 'Nationalists'. Unionists want to remain as apart of the UK, while the Nationalists want Northern Ireland to be united with the Republic of Ireland to make the Island of Ireland the one nation.

The fighting period known as 'The Troubles' is now over (60s-90s), and any fighting that occurs is usually due to tensions between the youth during cultural events such as the (July) 12th parade and sadly these annual riots have became an accepted part of Northern Ireland.

A number of Republican Irish were unable to accept that the population of Northern Ireland did not want to be part of a Catholic Republican state. On this basis they tried to force the Protestant majority to capitulate. In doing so they killed over 1000 people. They eventually gave up agreeing to the Belfast agreement in 1998

Overall there is the whole problem in Northern Ireland between those that want to be part of the United Kingdom and those that do not. Most of the time things are completely trouble free. At various times different issues can cause more significant problems which can lead to trouble. Marches that want to go through an area where they are not wanted can often lead to riots for example.
