Hindus are called Hindus because when the civilization of India started near the Indus River Valley, the people near the river were called the Indus, and then the name changed from word of mouth from Indu to Hindu

As is said above, the reason is the Indus River. Outside contact to Indian Subcontinent in ancient times came mostly from the west by crossing Indus river. This was done by Arab traders, etc. They referred to the people who lived near and across the Indus river as "indus" or "Indoos" which changed and became "Hindus". So, at the time it was a collective name for all the people who lived in the subcontinent and it represented, as you can expect, a mixture of cultures rather than a single culture or religion. -- Siv

The word Hindu is derived (through Persian) from the Sanskrit word 'Sindhu'. The historic local name for the Indus river in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent (now Pakistan). The Arabic term itself was taken from Persian term Hindu which refers to all Indians. The term Hinduism was later used occasionally in some Sanskrit texts such as the later Rajataranginis of Kashmir (Hinduka, 1450 BC) and some 16th-to 18th century Bengali Gaudiya Vaishnava texts.
