Hindus are called Hindus because when the civilization of India started near the Indus River Valley, the people near the river were called the Indus, and then the name changed from word of mouth from Indu to Hindu

As is said above, the reason is the Indus River. Outside contact to Indian Subcontinent in ancient times came mostly from the west by crossing Indus river. This was done by Arab traders, etc. They referred to the people who lived near and across the Indus river as "indus" or "Indoos" which changed and became "Hindus".
