Guam was first annexed as a result of the Spanish-American War. Guam was lost in WWII to Japan, but it was regained. Guam is a strategic military base to the US. In fact, there is a massive move of about 10,000 US Marines and their familes from Japan to Guam.

Guam is strategically located in the central Pacific very close to Asia. Guam houses a few military bases that is important to US national security.

Now that the global stage has turned to Asia, Guam is necessary for the US to remain a global superpower. If the US neglects their bases in the Asia-Pacific realm, the US will lose it's ability to function as a global power.
