The Vikings called it Greenland so people would want to go there as they thought it was nice and lush. They also gave Iceland its name so no-one would want to visit and take the goods they had secretly found... =]

Greenland is mainly populated by indigenous peoples. People have been in Greenland since prehistoric times. They did not see any reason to leave, obviously, as they established a culture to fit their habitat. Greenland also has a large population of Europeans, as Greenland has been under European control (Norwegian and Danish) for over 800 years.

Some danish guy named it Greenland because it sounded good. Though some people say he called it Grundland (Groundland) and somehow it became Grønland (Greenland)...
