Yes, the term, normally capitalized Xmas or X-mas is an abbreviation for the word Christmas, often used where a shorter word is required.

The term has been controversial among those who feel it is a secularization of the Christian meaning of the holiday. However, the use of the letter 'X' as an abbreviation for the word 'Christ' dates back to medieval times. The letter 'X' comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek form of 'Christ' and part of the Christian Chi-Rho symbol representing Him.

Christ"s Mass- Mass meaning a religious service. of course the Midnight Masses held on Christmas Eve are entirely ( in Synch) with this tradition. Several other holidays, all originally religious had the Mass or Mas ending such as Candlemas ( blessing of Candles- Ground Hog day to you), and there was a Michaelmas, ( st. Michael) Childermass- (holy innocents- Dec 28) only Church holiday even remotely focused ona very real problem- Child Abuse ( also accidental deaths of children in warfare, natural disasters, but now the emphasis should be on Child abuse.. some odd reason (Patrickmas) for Saint PATRICK"S DAY. Never caught on.

It is an abbreviation for Christmas from the mid 16th Century. The X is the Greek for the letter 'chi' in the word 'Christos' meaning 'Christ'. The short version is offensive to many because of its associations with advertising

Because x is like chris like in criss cross

Xmas is a common abbreviation of the word Christmas.

The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass,

while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ".

There is a common misconception that the word Xmas stems from a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas by taking the "Christ" out of "Christmas".
