Lincoln is considered by many historians to be the second-greatest president, just after George Washington. His portrait was put on the $5 bill in 1914 to coincide with the opening of the Lincoln Memorial, which is the major reason why that building is shown on the bill's reverse.

His image was put on the coin in 1909 in honor of his birth centennial. Abraham Lincoln is generally considered to be the greatest American president. He led the US through the Civil War and at the time of his assassination had begun a policy of reconciliation to reunite the North and South.

Mythology surrounding the portrait: Many people believe there's something special about Lincoln's image on the cent because it faces to the right while most other portraits face to the left. In fact, it's simply a matter of artistic choice: the coins' designs are in most cases based on portraits, medals, or bas-reliefs that already existed so the decision to face one way or the other was up to the original sculptors.

Prior to the current series of coins with presidential images, it was just about as likely for the portrait (almost always Miss Liberty) to face to one side as to the other. Also in recent years the Mint has moved away from left-facing portraits with the 2005 Jefferson nickel (to the right), the 2006-present nickel (forward), the Sacajawea dollar (3/4 face) and the Presidential dollars (forward) so there's nothing special about one direction versus another.

His portrait was placed on the bill in 1914, in conjunction with the construction of the Lincoln Memorial that year. The Memorial is of course shown on the back of the bill.
