Answer 1

Yes, several times in the past. They were rivals of England in the Middle Ages and during the colonization of the world.

Answer 2

They have been rivals with England for completely different reasons and, more often than not, France and Spain opposed each other as well. Of course, it goes without saying that colonial expansion also made these countries rivals in the Americas.

The enmity between France and England was territorial. Because of the Norman (French) invasion of England in 1066, both countries saw themselves as the rightful heirs of the other country and fought wars such as the Hundred Years War to secure power in the other's territory. Additionally, the French would aid Scots against the English and the English would aid the Burgundians against the French in order to weaken their opponent and possibly reclaim lost territory.

The enmity between Spain and England was religious. Spain considered itself the defender of Catholicism while England was proudly Protestant (Anglican Church). In its attempt to "end the impiety" they sent their armada to remove the English sovereign and put another in power who would return the country to Catholicism.

Why did France and Spain help the Americans fight the British?

The saying, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" comes to mind. France and Spain were at that time traditional enemies of and territorial competitors to England, so they naturally supported the rebellious Americans against England. It was probably a factor as well that France and Spain were still Roman Catholic while England had broken ties with Rome two centuries prior, and both France and Spain had suffered many defeats at the hands of the English. Helping the Americans gain independence from England would have been a nice bit of revenge.

Why did other nations help the patriots?

France had a bigger and better naval force than the Americans. France helped them out because they had been in war with England for a long time, and would jump in at the chance to defeat their enemy. Same with France, Spain also had been in war with England. They helped the colonies by supplying them with equipment. If there's other nations that helped them, then I don't know. I only know France and Spain.

Why did France and Spain become interested in the American Revolution?

England was their rival and competitor in colonizing the world, and because both countries had been defeated by the English in the past. Supporting the Americans was a chance for France and Spain to deliver some payback against England. Both countries also needed goods produced in America, so it was a helpful trade alliance as well as a political one.
