Why don't cats like having their bellies rubbed?

not all cats hate having their stomach rubbed. rubbing a cat's stomach is a trust issue. if a cat trust's you then it will let you rub it's stomach. the stomach is one of the most sensitive areas of a cat. True dat, i raised a kitten once and it let me hold it upside down, and rub its stomach :))

If a cat is well socialized, he/she will allow you to stroke their tail. We have six cats in total, and all will allow us to stroke their tails as a continuation of stroking their backs. As they walk past us we are also able to stroke their tails.

For similar reasons, most cats do not like having their feet touched, either. A cat that cannot run away quickly is extremely vulnerable to attack, so they instinctively protect their feet, just like they do with their bellies.

Many cats (mostly those that were raised solely around kind, gentle humans) will allow you to rub their bellies. Others will only allow their owners to do so. And others will not allow anyone to touch their bellies, ever. It depends on the cat's personality and upbringing. Cats that have had only positive experiences with humans are more likely to allow you to rub their bellies.

If a cat does allow you to rub its belly, remember to do so with a flat, open palm. Do not curl your fingers and scratch with your fingertips, as the cat may interpret this as an attack.
