The tilt of the earth at 23.45° is a result of collisions with large bodies during the formation of the planets in the solar system. The size of the bodies and the angle of collision determined the tilt and the rotation of the planets. Each planet has a different tilt with respect to the planet's plane of the ecliptic.

Because the Chinese wanted it tilted so they could start world domination, and cause global warming. So, one day, the Prime Minister was on every channel, and everyone had to watch, and do as he said, or be killed. So, on the count of "3", they all would jump. When he reached three, they all jumped. Then, the world was tilted. But, they also caused the volcano to go off in Pompeii, so they all died over there, and China laughed in joy. See, now you're a whole lot smarter!! THE END!! P.S. That was a joke!! I don't really know how it became tilted, but it was because God had a special reason. Probably so there would be seasons. God made it tilted, not China. THE REAL END!!

We can't say with absolute certainty what caused Earth to become tilted on its axis, the most accepted theory is that it's a result of a tremendous impact on Earth of a Mars-sized object not long after the solar system formed. Additionally, it's thought that the great amount of debris from this impact eventually formed itself into our moon.

In part because the Earth isn't perfectly symmetrical- it is ever so slightly off balance, so as it spins it tries to wobble. We actually wobble significantly less that you would expect from the shape of the Earth thanks to the gravity from the moon acting as a constant force in resistance to changes in our tilt.

We do not know why the axis of the Earth's rotation is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees (approximately) to the plane of the Earth's orbit. But there is no particular reason why the Earth ought to be spinning in some other direction.

Perhaps it has something to do with the massive impact that scientists suspect may have formed the Moon. But it was probably just the way the material in the accretion disk around the proto-Sun was spinning when it finally came together to form the Earth.

The Earth isn't tilted "on its side"; the Earth's axis of rotation is at a 23.5 degree tilt to the plane of the ecliptic.

There are many observed facts for which we do not know of any "reason"; this is one. The Earth is the way it is, and has been for 4+ billion years.

Current theory is that Earth is tilted vs the vertical due to impact(s) during its formation. This tilt is pretty much in lockstep with its translation movement around the sun, so the tilt, which causes the seasons to occur, repeats the position of earth every 12 months.

There never was any reason why ... as the earth grew and condensed out of the dust, debris, and

meteoric material circling the sun ... the spin of the growing solid ball had to wind up exactly

perpendicular to the plane in which it orbited the sun. And in fact ... surprise surprise ... it didn't.

Among the millions of bodies in the solar system today, we see a wide range of angles between

spin and orbital plane. Just like every other body that condensed out of the solar nebula, the

angle between earth's spin and orbital plane could have been anything. It happened to settle

down at about 66.5 degrees. Which has a lot to do with the benign climate on earth that makes

it a nice place for life to develop, but why should that number be any more surprising than any

other number?

the earth is slant because the sun is on it left side up and the moon is on it right side down and if it is not slant we won't have the normal circulation of the earth.

In a way, the Earth's axis IS tilted on its side, that's why we have seasons.

WHICH SIDE the axis of the earth is tilted?

The Earth spins about its axis. That defines the Earth's axis. It is the axis of spin that is tilted. If the Earth were not spinning it would not have an axis.

Is it bad when a planet is tilted?

No, planets are not bad because they are tilted. The Earth's tilt for example gives us the seasons. Uranus is tilted on its side; Venus is upside-down.

Is Earth the planet that rotates on its side?

No. It rotates in an axis that is about 23° tilted from perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. Uranus is the planet that is most tilted on its side, with an axial tilt of 97.77°.
