Easter is always on a Sunday. Sundays fall on different dates every year. There is no way for there to be an exact date for Easter because it has to be on a specific day of the week. The same thing happens with Thanksgiving.

Easter Sunday is the Sunday after the first full moon following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox.

An equinox is the day when the tilt of the earth means that the sun is directly over the equator; this leads to the length of the day and the night being the same. The sun will rise and set at roughly six o'clock giving twelve hours of day and twelve of night.

There are two eqinox a year, the vernal in the spring, and the autumnal in the autumn. the vernal falls on the 20th or 21st of March.

Easter Sunday is the Sunday after the first full moon after The 20th of March.

There are twenty-nine days between each full moon, so the full moon runs on a different cycle to calendar months. This means that the first full moon after the 20th of March appears on a different day each year, so the date of Easter Sunday moves each year.

Easter Sunday this year (2012) will be on the 8th of April.

This is true for Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, the Eastern Orthodox and others calculate Easter slightly differently.

Easter is a movable feast. It is usually celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon on or after the 21st of March because it is based on the lunar calendar.
