The TV format setting is so that it sends the correct picture information when connected to a TV. It may be connected to a 4:3 aspect ratio TV or a 16:9 aspect ratio TV.

For example if it was sending a 16:9 picture to a 4:3 TV, some of the picture to the left ad right sides would be missing. If sending 4:3 picture to a 16:9 TV the picture would be stretched across the screen distorting the picture.

Are square screen TVs still manufactured?

By square, the question probably refers to the 4 : 3 aspect ratio that all televisions used until the 1990s. The move towards wide screen (16 wide by 9 high) has been going on for about 20 years. Europe was the first region to adopt the 16 : 9 format with most standard definition television production using it by about 2000. North America on the other hand made no moves towards the wide format until HD television was introduced. Standard definition television signals can be formatted in either widescreen or standard format but HD content is only produced in 16 : 9 format. HD production is now becoming the norm throughout the television world. This is a global standard for HD so there is no prospect of television reverting to the 4 : 3 format.

When did widescreen become a standard for UK tv?

Widescreen television was introduced in the UK and Germany at the beginning of the 1990s. The rest of Europe started to move to widescreen a few years later. The new format was used on standard definition signals before HD broadcasts were started. Widescreen was broadcast alongside standard 4:3 content. A widscreen signal (WSS) is sent with the broadcast to indicate the format the television should display. Within 10 years. almost all content is produced in widescreen format and archive material is generally converted to widescreen format before broadcast.

What does LB mean at the end of a TV show description?

LB generally means that it's presented in a "letter box" format. It's a widescreen format that's actually a bit wider than 16:9 and will present with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. The bars will be more noticeable on a standard 4:3 television than a 16:9 widescreen television.

Size ratio for HDTV projection television?

Any current HDTV will have an aspect ratio of 16:9. Only older CRT or rear-projection TV's will have the old 4:3 format.

BBC 2 is the first color television channel?

In the UK, BBC 2 was indeed the first colour television channel. It started in 1967 and used the new "high resolution" format of 625 lines instead of the 405 lines that had been use on the black and white broadcasts. Within 3 years, BBC 1 and ITV had adopted the new format and also began broadcasting in colour. Although the broadcast format supported colour, only a few hours of colour television were broadcast each week during the 1960s. By 1973 the great majority of output was in colour on all three channels.

Why are people short and fat on flat screen tv?

You are probably watching a 4:3 (square) broadcast on a 16:9 (rectangle) television. Your TV should have format modes, cycle through them until you find one you like better than the "strech" mode it is likely set to now.

Can S-VHS record widescreen?

S-VHS will record widescreen video as long as it is standard definition. VHS does not support high definition at all. A feed from a source on either a composite or S-video connection will be recorded whether it is 16 : 9 or 4 : 3 format. In Europe, widescreen format has been used in standard definition broadcasts for almost 20 years. Many VHS recorders in Europe can also capture an indicator within the signal to show that it is in a widescreen format (known as WSS for wide screen signalling). The recorder will then pass the signal to the television on playback enabling the television to adjust the screen format automatically. However, in North America, widescreen has not been introduced for standard definition signals. VHS recorders often will not handle the WSS so if a widescreen format is played back, the screen format may need to be adjusted manually. Some experimentation may be needed to get the image format right.

Why do I miss the buttom of the picture if I watch PAL TV on NTSC TV with HDMI connection.?

PAL is the European colour system and is based on 576 lines. NTSC is the North American system and it uses 480 lines. HDMI will deliver the signal to the television in the format that is put out by the player or tuner. If the NTSC television does not resize the image, you will see the first 480 lines of the picture and the remaining 94 lines are forever lost. Many televisions can be set up to resize the image. Use the setup menu to find the resize or picture size controls. Also, PAL (standard definition European television) has used widescreen format for many years. UK and Germany are almost all widescreen broadcasts while other European countries are still converting. NTSC (standard definition American television), on the other hand has remained 4 : 3 ratio. North America only saw the wider 16 : 9 format when HD television arrived. Bearing this in mind, the television may be widening the image to fit the width of the screen and then losing the top and bottom as a result. (Many American televisions do not recognise the widescreen signal that identifies 16:9 images) Once again, the sizing menu may give you the setting to see the whole picture. If there is no size setting on the television, you may have to accept the missing picture or replace the television for one that will properly handle PAL 576 signals. If you are buying in North America, buy carefully. Although most European televisions can handle 480 line signals, North American televisions often will not handle 576 line. make sure you ask the question before investing in a new television.
