The main reason the US and Iran dispute is because of Israel. Israel is loathed by Islamic nations because it is located in the region of Palestine (the Holy Land) which is seen as the place where Mohammed achieved his highest form of enlightenment, however, it is also the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity. The US is a very strong ally of Israel's, which Iran doesn't like. The two countries currently share no foreign relations.

Additionally, Iran vandalized the United States embassy in Tehran and kidnapped its officials for 444 days. Iran has also attempted to sabotage US troops in Iraq by using it Al-Kutz Force to plant IEDs and lead other attacks against US Soldiers.

While Iran may feel threatened by the US, the US does not issue threats to Iran. Iran has recently been often cautioned to stop human rights abuses, internationally illegal activities, and to end their nuclear arms research. This has been done by the UN as a whole, not exclusively by the US. The US is not the world police, and does not strive for the position.

Iran is not at all a threat. They are a total third world nation. Most of them don't even have indoor plumbing.

The reason the United States says they are a threat is because:

1. Recently, Iran made an agreement with Pakistan and India to build an oil pipeline from Iran, through Pakistan and into India. This would create competition with the U.S's Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline, owned by Halliburton (former vice-president Dick Cheney, who believes Iran is the biggest threat to the United States).

2. In early 2012, Iran became the first Middle Eastern country to 'dump' the petrodollar. Iran now accepts payment for its oil in Rubles for the Russians, Yuans for the Chinese, Rupees for the Indians, as well as Gold and Silver. This was a tragic blow to the petrodollar. One that will eventually kill it.

As for the Nuclear situation, India, North Korea, China, Pakistan, Russia, as well as Israel all have nuclear weapons. If we let India, North Korea, Pakistan, China, and Russia have them, why can't we let Iran have them? Plus Israel has weapons, and can defend themselves if need be.

Any country that values nuclear arms and oil money more than the welfare of its own people ( the lack of indoor plumbing, the lack of infrastructure, the lack of representative government ) could be called a threat. While the US has lost much of its luster and shine, it is still the country of choice for many immigrants.

It isn't.

Iran is perceived by some as a potential nuclear threat due to their desire to develop nuclear power, but they do not have weaponry capable of either carrying a nuclear warhead further than the Mediterranean, or of producing such a warhead in the first place. Some see their rivalry with Israel and the contentions of the Middle East as a possible jumping point for a third world war between the Muslim world and the Christian world, but this demonstrates a clear lack of understanding both of the political state of the various sects of Islam, and unity of the various Middle Eastern states, and of Iran's capability to overcome the first obstacle: Israel. Their backdoor funding of Shia terrorist groups has been seen as being somehow connected to the Sunni al Qaeda and their attempts at spreading worldwide terror, but the modern Iranian state is a developing country held back by economic sanctions and lack of international credibility. Iran's new president has demonstrated a desire to reconnect with the world, improve its standing with the west, limit its nuclear development and ease tensions in general.

Iran is in all honesty no more a global threat than Egypt was prior to the revolutions. Terrorists which the country may produce could threaten any part of the world, but the Iranian state has no interest in striking out against the world, especially when their first and chiefest opponent, Israel, is armed with the most technologically advanced weapons of the day and has demonstrated many times its ability to defeat other equally threatening opponents handily.

The US had a warm relationship with the Shah of Iran and supported him for a few decades. After the Iranian Revolution, the Shah fled to Egypt, but was forced to come to the United States for cancer treatments. While he was in the US, the Iranian government demanded that the Shah be returned to Iran for trial (and most likely summary execution). The US refused. As a display of their anger, the Iranian government attacked the US Embassy in Tehran and held its members hostage for 444 days. Iran has never apologized for this violation of US sovereignty, which is a violation of all international diplomatic norms.

Furthermore, the government of Iran is the only government in the world that repeatedly and actively incites for and monetarily supports the eradication of another UN member state. Given that this is a member state with which the US has had a fruitful fifty-year alliance, that causes additional strain.

Finally, the Iranian government represses its own people to an unimaginable degree and the US will not support such a regime against the will of its people.
