The phases of the Moon are caused by the angle between the Moon and the Sun changing. At one time we see the illuminated side, at another time, its dark side. The full cycle is 29 1/2 days.

The phases are basically caused by the Moon revolving in its orbit around the Earth.

The motion of the Earth and Moon around the Sun has a small effect too.

So, the Moon orbits Earth in about 27.3 Earth days, but the complete phase cycle takes about 29.5 Earth days.

The Moon's rotation period is exactly equal to its orbital period.

This results in the Moon having a "day" of about 29.5 Earth days.

So, the Moon's day length is related to the phases of the Moon.

However, I wouldn't say it was the cause of the phases.

yes, the moon phases change every day. as long as the moon keeps orbiting earth, that will happen.

What causes phases of the moon to change in the same pattern every 29 days?

The moon's phases result directly from the moon's synodic period, the length of time it takes for the moon to move from one location relative to the sun back to the same location relative to the sun after orbiting earth. This connection with the sun makes perfect sense since the phases of the moon have everything to do with its appearance to us in terms of how much or how little of its visible surface is illuminated by the sun.

The moon displays a complete cycle of its 'phases' every 29.5 days.

What causes half of the moon cycle to happen?

Every month as the Moon cycles through its phases it appears to change shape. The Moon always has the same spherical shape, but stargazers on Earth see different fractions of the dark and illuminated portions of the Moon as the Moon orbits Earth. The common urban myth that Earth's shadow falling on the Mooncauses lunar phases is incorrect.
