Gravity. The circulator pump is at the bottom as is the drain pipe and drain pump. All seals are likely to fail but the most common is the seal on the circulation pump shaft. There is often a paddle/level switch on the undertray that cuts off the machine if the water level gets too high. The easiest way to find the area of a water leak that is not obvious is to dry the floor under the appliance, remove the undertray and return the machine to the upright position. Then put a newspaper under it. Mark the position of front edge of the appliance on the paper. Run the appliance and periodically pull the paper from under the appliance, putting the paper back in exactly the same place after each check. When water is seen on the paper, stop the machine. the mark on the paper can them be used to line up with and locate the area of the leak.
