Under the old traditional way of doing things...keeping troops in a region for stability purposes is the "usual answer." However under the post cold war "hi-tech" computer age & war against terrorism, special warfare troops are needed for special warfare; the war on terrorism. Example: The USN SEALs that termininated those three Somalia hi-jackers last month on the ocean. One shot, one kill. No expensive billion dollar equipment used nor needed.

The same sort of action is needed for Iraq/Afghanistan.

However, that's not "too" good for job security nor high defense budget requests for the US Army, US Marines, US Air Force, and US Navy. One shot, One kill results from Special Warfare personnel only costs a dollar or two; and no way justifies requests for billions of dollars for new tanks, aircraft, or warships from congress...every time the defense budget comes up.

In the late 1980's the US was experiencing MANY military base closures...as the Soviets were collapsing and the cold war was nearing it's end. Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1990/1991 respectively) slowed down those base closures. If terrorists can be eliminated by selected Special Warfare personnel (SEALS, Special Forces, Delta Forces, etc. etc.) then that will put our conventional Army (tanks), Navy (warships), and Air Force (Bombers/Fighters) nearly out of a job.

What is Obama's position on the Iraq War?

Obama believes that going to war in Iraq was a mistake, which says that all the soldiers that have fought for this country under George Bush might have lost their lives for no reason. Obama opposed expanding the war to Iraq because al Qaeda was in Afghanistan and Pakistan and he felt that the war in Iraq would distract America from capturing bin Laden. When America began occupying Iraq, there was no al Qaeda in Iraq. Al Quadra in Iraq was created during America's occupation of Iraq when America controlled Iraq. The reason for invading Iraq stated by George Bush was that Iraq had weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). The data supporting the existence of WMD was wrong, either deliberately manipulated by George Bush, or he made a mistake. After it was proven that Iraq had no WMD, George Bush said America must continue fighting until Saddam Hussein was captured. After Saddam Hussein was hung by the neck until dead, George Bush said we had to stay for Nation Building. That means that we must stay until the Iraqi's decide that they want American style government - Not British style, not Indian style, not French style, not Jordan style, not Egyptian style, no they must choose American style government before George Bush will leave Iraq! 70% of all Iraqis and the Iraqi puppet government put in place by America wants the American occupation of Iraq to end. George Bush's popularity has dropped to under 25% in America because he refuses to listen to Americans and end the occupation of Iraq.

Why did George W. Bush want to be president?

Did Obama ask the American troops to leave Iraq?

No, he did not. President Obama had promised to withdraw troops and end the Iraq War; but he was also willing to leave a residual force in Iraq. Unfortunately, the new leader of Iraq at that time, Nouri Al Maliki, did not want American troops there, and no agreement was reached to keep them there. Therefore, no residual force was left in Iraq in 2011 when US troops came home.

Why did the federal debt increase under George W. Bush?

The federal debt increases because Congress increases the debt ceiling. They do so because they want to spend money to help their constituents and so get them votes. Anything popular will do. in the case of George W. Bush, the object was the war in Iraq and Afghanistan which was motivated by the attacks on the world-trade center and the pentagon.
