The wiring may be disconnected or not connected properly. Make sure you are connecting them to the left and right surround speaker jacks if you want to watch a 5.1 movie. Connecting them to the rear surround if the system is 7.1 will only work if the movie itself is mixed in 7.1 surround, or the system is set up to send a 5.1 mix to both the surround and back speakers.
No. Each system incorporates an amplifier and surround sound decoder along with the speakers. The LG system has a DVD player integrated in to the system.
After spending a couple of hours on this, I found the answer 10 minutes after posting the question... The problem was that the "A" and "B" speaker selections control the front speakers only. The surround sound speakers are always on, regardless of which set of speakers is selected. The answer to the problem was to set the receiver in "direct stereo" mode so that the surrouund sound stuff was taken out of the loop.
The best wireless surround sound systems available as of 2013 include the Rocketfish Wireless Speaker, Schooners II and the Yamaha Wireless Speakers. You can purchase these items online from retailers such as Amazon.
First of all, your choice in Denon will help you. I own a Denon avr-2808ci. From your specs you are running 50 watts per speaker at 8 ohms. This in the end will lead you to what you want to purchase. If you are listening to music (primarily) then you cannot go wrong with a pair of Bowers and Wilkins 684 speakers. They are great for music, provide great high volume response, and are good looking. This option, however, will be on the more expensive range, and they are tower speakers (stand around 3.5' tall. The two speakers will cost around $1100 together, and that is before tax and speaker wire expenses. With a high quality brand like Denon, the speakers do not need to be as high end as B&W to sound great. I ran my Denon with an old set of Yamaha surround sound speakers that were 300 with the Yamaha receiver. So in the end, I really haven't given you an answer, just a suggestion. You can walk into any Best Buy and get what you need/want, and if you are looking to spend more you can go on Best Buy's Magnolia site, or go to a location with Magnolia and find a set of great speakers.
Your home theater doesn't have to be one brand. The TV can be one, the receiver another, and the speakers the third. The best speakers are made by companies that don't make the other two parts. For TV, go with a major brand, such as Sony, Sharp, Samsung, LG or Panasonic. For receivers, go with Pioneer, Yamaha, Onkyo or Harmon-kardon. For speakers, I've always had good luck with Klipsch.
