You don't want to under-sell yourself or get excluded from consideration. Let's say you put $30,000 on your resume and you apply for a job that they are willing to pay $35,000. They will offer you $30K. Or what if there is a dream job that offers so much more than money, perhaps great benefits or an industry you would love to be part of, but the job only pays $28,000 - they might not even call you for an interview.
