Your wisdom teeth do not necessarily have to be pulled out. Usually, the situation is that the gums are not large enough to accommodate all of your teeth, including the wisdom ones, hence they have to be removed to prevent crowding, which can be very painful in some cases. There are a few people whose mouths are large enough to accommodate wisdom teeth, so they don't have to be pulled out.

Wisdom teeth do not always require removal. Many people have wisdom teeth that have erupted normally and have not caused any problems. In some cases, however, wisdom teeth may be impacted. This means that there is not enough space in the jaw for the teeth to come in normally or to come in at all. Impacted wisdom teeth can become infected or interfere with other teeth. To prevent such problems impacted wisdom teeth are often removed.

The wisdom teeth are closest to the Oral/Maxillofacial and parietal nerves. If a wisdom tooth becomes erupted or infected it should be removed because of danger to the nerves on the side of your face. That is why, when you are having a wisdom tooth removed, you are required to "sign papers" to release the oral surgeon from liability. That is because interruption/damage to your facial nerves can cause temporary or permanent paralysis to (either) side of your face.

The most common reason dentists/orthodontists request it is because it will crowd out the other teeth, causing lots of problems in the future!

Because sometimes you don't have enough room in your mouth for them. And sometimes, if they were allowed to grow in, they would push your other teeth out of the way and make them crooked.

If wisdom teeth cause your teeth to get crooked Do your teeth get straight after you get your wisdom teeth extractions?

Not necessarily. Teeth tend to become more crowed as we age, especially the lower front teeth. This happens in some people regardless of whether they have wisdom teeth or not. Therefore, removing the wisdom teeth, solely for the purpose of hoping to get naturally straighter teeth, won't work.

The teeth that are referred to as "wisdom teeth" are teeth numbered, 1, 16, 17, and 32. They are located the furthest in the back of the mouth. However, do not get these confused with the molars. The wisdom teeth come in where the gums are located.
