To begin with, the river tee runs along the top of a cliff. It then flows over the side, forming a basic overhang. The force of the water (the average is a volume of about 50 cubic feet per second) erodes the soft rock, creating a plunge pool. However, cracks start to appear in the hard rock (whinstone) because the soft rock supporting it has eroded away. The hard rock then collapses, filling in part of the plunge pool. This happens many times over millions of years, creating a waterfall
