Generally speaking there is something that is irritating the bowel or interfering with digestion. This can be a toxin, a medical condition, or a microorganism.

The most common reason for diarrhea in the developed world is microorganism infestation. That is some sort of food/water poisoning. These can include but are not limited to:

  • Bacillus cereus
  • Campylobacter jejuni
  • Clostridium botulinum
  • Clostridium perfringens
  • Cryptosporidium parvum
  • Escherichia coli 0157:H7
  • Giardia lamblia
  • Hepatitis A
  • Listeria monocytogenes
  • Norovirus
  • Salmonella
  • Shigella
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Toxoplasma gondii
  • Vibrio
  • Yersinia

Common toxins can be a simple as a milk or lactose allergy, or as serious as a heavy metal poisoning.

Medical conditions that can cause diarrhea are far too numerous to list, and at that point you should definitely be seeking medical attention.
It is because your body detects an unknown or harmful substance in your body which could be poisonous.
