You probably have irritants in your throat that cause you to cough. Your body wants to get rid of any germs of irritants, so it sends them out by coughing. Make sure that you have a tissue or your arm ready to stop those germs from flying through the air and causing someone else to catch them!

Coughing is your body's way of getting things out of your airway that shouldn't be there. You must take a deep breath in to have enough air in your lungs to force out and dislodge or blow out mucus, sputum, aspirated liquids and any foreign substances that manage to get into your bronchial tubes or lungs. You can also cough as a reflex when irritants trigger the body to think there may be an obstruction or foreign substance in the respiratory tract causing the irritation.

Humans cough because the body is trying to get rid of material that is not supposed to be in your lungs. For example, if you accedentally swallow water while inhaling, the water will go down your air pipe to your lungs. which is a place where no other material should be except for air. if water gets into your lungs, you start coughing to get the water out.

You start to get a tickle in your throat. When you do don't try to hold back because the tickle is going to get bigger an the cough is going to get worse. Trust me, I speak from personal experience.
