Nose has a few layers of filter. The hair in the nose filters out large durst or particle. And there's a layer of mucus membrane that binds to finer particle to prevent it from entering the lung. Air also get moisture in the nasal cavity prior to entering the lung. Besides that, breathing through your mouth can cause dry mouth, dry lips, and dry throat.

Because you breathe better through your nose, breathing through your mouth brings in dust and whatnot and that goes into your lungs, as breathing through your nose the dust is being trapped by your nose hair and mucus. Duh. :P

The nose and nasal-sinus cavities serve two purposes:

  1. to warm the air we breathe
  2. remove small particles, including germs, which is why we have nose hairs
When we breathe through the mouth, we don't get those two benefits. We can more easily get sore throats and airborne infections.
