Poor drainage. Wet lands can arise in any environment (save lake rivers and oceans) if this is a water influx, such as a river or seepage, and low loss.

Aquifers absorb water the same way that sponges do. However, aquifers are actually permeable rocks that lay underground and soak up moisture.
