The Founding Fathers did not want to have a monarch or ruling hierarchy, but rather a system of government responsive to the needs and desires of its citizens. The division of powers by the Constitution reflected their aim to prevent authoritarian government and to some extent they succeeded.

However, any government can become abusive in its power, regardless of its noble ideals. It may become an entity unto itself, and begin to move away from its purpose of limited service to its people.

Democracy is something that evolved - it was never adopted. What initially was adopted under the bicameral system is polity. Polity is how societies organize themselves into governing bodies.

We have a 'representative democracy' because people banded together and agreed to form a government for the benefit of all. Eventually it was decided that the best way to run this government would be through a representative democracy, where all adults would have one vote on each type of representative to send to government office.

Our founding fathers did not want to be ruled by a king or a parliament that was not fair. They wanted to establish a government in which the people are in charge. America is actually a democratic republic where the people elect representatives to do the work of decision making in government.

A democratic system of government is best for all citizens not just those living in the United States. Citizens have a right to vote for their leaders. Elections need to be open ones with more than one party being represented. Also, the term democracy is seldom used correctly. The term means that all citizens vote on almost every issue. Modern democratic systems have voters elect public office holders and/or elect those officers who do have the voter granted authority to appoint other official positions.

Ultimately, if the appointed officials prove to be "disasters" the voters will elect different office holders who have the power to appoint other officials.

The United States is not a democracy. It is a Constitutional Republic. The Constitution is the law of the land, and proscribes how the government will be organized and run. It is a Republic, since we elect people who vote on laws on our behalf.
