Why do we do war?

Wars have been fought for many reasons. Most stupid and some very reasonable.

Wars go back to the beginning of man. We fought for over 100.000 years and we are still going. It is sadly just human nature to kill each other.

WWII in my opinion, was fought for a very reasonable reason and WWI was an "ok" reason but without WWI there would be no WWII in that short of time.

The existing international agreements on warfare came about for several reasons; however, the underlying thinking is rather simple: self-interest.

The rules on warfare generally restrict activities which are excessively (even for war) damaging, particularly to non-combatants and non-military infrastructure. Thus, it is generally in each side's benefit that they adhere to the rules, since that gives impetus to the other side to adhere to them, too. The most obvious example is the concept of Prisoners of War. If my country adheres to the rules, and treats any captured individual properly, then there is a high likelihood that my opponent will do the same; thus, after this war is over, my country will get back my captured citizens, which is Good.

Thus, in any war that is not a war of annihilation (that is, a conflict where the victor plans on absolutely wiping out the other side completely), adhering to restrictions on conduct in war is decidedly in both party's best interests.

The great modern debate about this topic is how to deal with opponents who refuse to adhere to the agreed-upon standards of conduct. For example, if your opponent refuses to wear distinctive uniforms (i.e. makes an effort to distinguish between civilian and military persons), should your side make any effort to adhere to the restrictions around use of military force in a nominally civilian area?
