The Academy of Motion Pic Arts & Science (A.M.P.A.S.) was an organization setup in 1927 by a few H'wood heavyweights led by Louis B.Mayer,with the sole intention of raising the cultural & technical standards of professional film-making. As Cinema is an amalgamation of 2 streams, i.e. ARTS (Acting,Screenplay,Direction etc) & SCIENCE (Editing,Sound- Mixing,Spl Effects etc) the Academy makes spl awards of merit known as the Academy Award or the Oscar,a symbolic statuette has been given away since 1927 to persons from both the technical & performing arts category winners are selected through a secret ballot votes are cast by around 5000 members of the Academy, drawn from the performing,technical, & administrative branches of the Film Industry & membership is strictly by invitation & their eligibility depends on the requirements of a given branch of the Academy.
