Polar bears live at the polar region (the Arctic) of the world, and are only found there, unlike other bears. This is why they're called "polar bears."
The polar bear is called a polar bear because it is a bear, and lives in the area of North pole in the Arctic.

So Don't Be Fooled When You Think That Polar Bears Eat Penguins. Because They Live In Diffrent Places.

Quite obviously, Polar bears got their name because of the fact that they live on the north pole, and are from the bear family.
They are a type of bear (the largest, in fact) found in the north polar region, hence "polar bears".

According to the oldest known fossil records of the Polar Bear, dating back about 130,000 years. It's believed that the Polar Bear "diverged" about 200,000 years ago from their closely related ancestor the Brown Bear. The Brown Bear is still a close relative, and can even be cross bred with a Polar Bear, to produce cubs that will grow up to be fertile adults. For more details, please see sites listed below.

The word "grizzly" in its name refers to "grizzled" or grey hairs in its fur, but when naturalist George Ord formally named the bear in 1815, he misunderstood the word as " grisly", to produce its biological latin specific or subspecific name"horriblilis.
