The reason people of the earth speak different languages is because of Nimrod's rebellion against God with the Tower of Babel:-

Gen 11:1-9 NET The Dispersion of the Nations at Babel

The whole earth had a common language and a common vocabulary. (v.2) When the people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. (v.3) Then they said to one another, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." (They had brick instead of stone and tar instead of mortar.) (v.4) Then they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name [BBE: "a great name"] for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth." (v.5) But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people had started building. (v.6) And the LORD said, "If as one people all sharing a common language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be beyond them. (v.7) Come, let's go down and confuse their language so they won't be able to understand each other."(v.8) So the LORD scattered them from there across the face of the entire earth, and they stopped building the city. (v.9) That is why its name was called Babel - because there the LORD confused the language of the entire world, and from there the LORD scattered them across the face of the entire earth.

Language is constantly evolving. Even today, we can see subtle differences between the English used in England and that used in the United States. Modern English is different to that used in Shakespeare's time and vastly different to that used at the Time of William the Conqueror. The King James Bible was first translated in 1611, but a new version was published in 1769, with many spelling changes. A modern English King James Bible was prepared in the twentieth century.

Italian, French and Spanish have their roots in Latin, but have evolved in different, mutually incomprehensible directions. Similar changes occurred in Asia - for example, Mandarin, Shanghainese and Cantonese all have the same roots but are now so different that a Mandarin speaker can not understand a Cantonese conversation.

Over thousands of years, languages have changed, some have fallen into disuse and new languages have arisen.
