There is no such language as Mexican, but the indigenous "Mexican" language would be Nahuatl, which was outlawed after the Spanish Conquest. It is currently a regional language spoken by 1.5 million Mexican people.

Because present-day Mexico was conquered and settled by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. As conquerors, they imposed their language, religion and culture among the peoples of that country, destroying the indigenous cultures along the way, such as Mayan, Aztec and many others.

However, not all peoples were conquered at the same time; some groups of indigenous people managed to flee from the European encroachment. Nowadays, there are some 15.7 million people who are considered indigenous to Mexico; most of them speak any of several native languages, including Nahuatl (Aztec), Yucatec (Mayan), Tzotzil, Mixtec or Zapotec. They speak 54 languages that are recognized as national languages and can be used for official purposes, besides Spanish.

Because Mexico was "discovered", conquered and settled by Spanish conquistadors since 1521, during the Age of Exploration. Mexico then became an overseas territory of the Spanish Crown for the following 300 years, adopting the language, religion and traditions of the European "motherland".

Mexico became independent of Spain by the end of 1821, but by that time, more than 90% of the population already had Spanish as their main language. Nowadays (2016), 93% of the population speaks Spanish or speaks it besides any of the 63 Amerindian languages located within Mexico's territory.
