Last names began differently than they are today. When a person was born centuries ago he/she were identified by where they lived. An example of that was da Vinci. He was from Vinci, Italy. People also got last names from the jobs they did. A person in Germany named Wasserman would be a water man someone who took care of the water, or in England a Clark would be a clerk. In many cases last names also identified that they were the son or daughter of a particular family. The usage of a von in a name was telling others they were of a particular family or place. Many people changed names because of war or spelling problems. Schmit became Smith.
