Because by the time you get them, you are old enough and smart enough to grab pliers and rip them out yourself instead going to the dentist and giving them a ridiculous amount to do it when you have all of the tools to do so in your shed.

They are generally thought to be called wisdom teeth because they appear so late - much later than the other teeth, at an age where people are presumably "wiser" than as a child, when the other teeth erupt.

The wisdom teeth are also called third molars. They are normally the last teeth in each arch (upper and lower) to erupt. Sometimes the third molars don't erupt (become impacted) because there is not enough space but we'll save that discussion for another question. The third molars are sometimes called wisdom teeth because they normally erupt around 18 years of age, when teens are supposed to be turning the corner to adulthood and "wisdom".

Wisdom teeth start to erupt at about 18 years of age. Thus the term wisdom teeth.

I believe it is because the wisdom teeth come in when you are older. Late teens and 20's. Supposedly a person is wiser then lol. Hope that helps.

Because they don't erupt until early adulthood -- the theoretical age at which one stops behaving like an idiot.
