Christmas celebrates the birthday of Jesus Christ. That is why we call this time of year 'Christmas' - we celebrate the 'Mass', or church service, for Christ.
The word Christmas (or Christ's Mass) comes from the Old English name Cristes Maesse - Christ's Mass - and is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. The first recorded observance occurred in Rome in AD360, but it wasn't until AD440 that the Christian Church fixed a celebration date of 25 December.

The giving of presents at Christmas symbolises the giving of gifts to the infant Jesus. In the gospel accounts gifts were not brought until the arrival of the Three Wise Men, three kings or Magi an event commemorated in the Feast of the Epiphany (6 January). Many christian festivals overlay more ancient pagan festivals and it is possible that just as the date of Christmas is close to more ancient mid winter fesival the giving of gifts may also have been part of this more ancient festival. In many parts of the Orthodox Church Christmas itself is not celebrated until January 7. The date of 25th December for Christmas in the Catholic Church and its sister churches is largely arbitrary as is the date in the Othodox church.
