The icons on the desktop and on the taskbar disappears due to insufficient storage. Eg. If your window is installed on Drive C and there is no space available on the drive so the icons will disappear. You need to Increase your Drive C Space using the Disk Management tool on your Windows. and the problem will be solved.
Many people uses the CCleaner for getting rid of the problem. It deletes the extra cache and files but for a short period of time, the icons gets back, but as the space decreases again on the drive and there is no more space for the cache to be saved. It causes the Icons to disappear.

Shell32.dll holds all the icons for Windows. You might want to get a third party program to change the icons for you if you are.
In windows 98 and windows me, the icons have a color depth of 16-bit, in windows xp the icons have a color depth of 32-bit and so they are higher quality. Note: Windows xp more user freindly and graphics clear.

Nothing is wrong. This is actually a "feature" of Windows XP. After a time, most unused icons in the system tray will be hidden. You will notice that just to the left of the system tray is a small button. Click the button, and the tray will expand again.
