In domestication horses need their hooves trimmed to keep them a proper shape to avoid lameness. In the wild horses 'trim' their own hooves by walking on rough ground which wears them down.

What medical needs does a horse need?

Horses need their hooves trimmed, teeth floated, vaccine shots, monthly wormer, and proper grooming and exercise. If that is what you are asking.

Do i need to cut my horses toenails?

Horses don't have toenails, they have hooves. And yes, usually they need to be trimmed regularly. Many horses are shod, and will need new shoes something like every 6 weeks. Even an unshod horse will need its hooves trimmed, unless it somehow manages to get enough natural wear from moving around in its paddock to keep the hooves at a suitable length, which would be quite rare.

How often do horses hooves need to be trimmed?

Pick your horses hooves out daily, or whenever you are up at the boarding place. As stones can get caught in the hoof, causing a stone bruise potentially. Also in the muddy seasons going too long without picking the hooves clean can develop thrush.

What breed of horses would you trim?

Basically, you don't have to really trim horses unless you go to shows. There are some breeds, such as the Friesian, that should NOT be trimmed at all. The Arabian should have a long bridlepath, but mane and tail should not be trimmed. With any horse, however, you can trim their whiskers and lond hairs around their faces, but there are some rules in 4H about trimming. Horses don't need to be trimmed unless they go to a competition, as the long hair around their faces helps them find out what is going on and the hair on their legs protects them against mud and debris.

Why do horses hooves need care every 4-6 weeks?

Horses hooves grow like out fingernails do. Also like our fingernails, horses hooves need to be trimmed and maintained. Poorly cared for hooves lead to a ridiculous number of problems, the first being cracks in hoof wall, lameness, inability to walk... the list goes on.

Do horses shoes grow constantley?

Horses hooves are made of the same material as your toenails. Therefore they grow constantly and need to be trimmed every once in a while. Horse shoes, however are made of metal and are attached to the hoof and therefore never grow.

How often do you trim a horse's feet?

Normally the rule of thumb for horses with shoes is 6-8 weeks but this can vary greatly from horse to horse. Occasionally some horses have certain issues with their feet that require special attention such as special shoes and may require the horse to be re-shod sooner than 6-8 weeks, perhaps at 5 weeks. Also, this time frame may increase in the winter months as horses hooves grow faster in the spring and summer and growth subsides in the winter. Horses that are barefoot will probably require trimming on a different time frame depending on their activity level and what type of terrain they are on. If a barefoot horse is stalled in a soft bedded stall, they will more than likely need to be trimmed on the 6-8 week timeframe. If the horse is housed in a large pasture where it is more apt to move around all day over varried terrain may only need it's feet trimmed every 9-10 weeks. Again, this will all depend on the horses level of activity. The more it moves around over varried terrain and wears it's hooves down, the less it will probably need it's hooves trimmed. An interesting fact: it typically takes a horse a year to grow a whole new hoof, from the hairline to the ground.

What do cows wear on the bottom of their feet?

Cows do have feet, but they are known as hooves. They are hard, like a horse's hoof, but are cloven, meaning that they are divided... like having two "toes." A cow's hoof has a hard, rubbery sole and a hard, outer covering of material like horn. They grow constantly and need to be worn off or trimmed.
