∙ 10y agoWhen a honey bee stings a person or animal, they leave a barbed stinger in the flesh. They are unable to bull out the stinger which pulls out the bees digestive tract, muscles and nerves, which causes the honey bees to die.

The reason that honey bees die after stinging is because they cannot retract their sting barb which is an integral part of their body. ie, when the sting barb pierces your skin, the honey bee cannot withdraw the barb so its only method of escape is to leave the barb in your body, but the barb is such a large part of the bee's body that it cannot live without it and will be dead within a few minutes.

Is the stinger always left in the skin?
No the stinger is not left in the skin from Wasps or Hornets. They just sting you and pull it out. Only Honey Bees leave a stinger in you. My family are beekeepers so I have been stung by many bees but since honey bees die when they loose their stinger they don't sting unless they feel threatened.
