The American goldfinch does not migrate over most of it's range, but Northern birds may move southward in rough winters. The birds are more inconspicious in winter, as males lose their bright colors and resemble the more drab females.

They do not migrate, but the males molt and lose their bright colored feathers . So they look more like a sparrow during winter months.

Only the brightly colored males lose their colors, and appear very similar to the olive drab females.
