It eat leaves because it is a Herbivore (doesn't eat meat)

Or if it is a carnivore (a meat eater) and it doesn't catch a herbivore or an animal it will sometimes eat leaves because it is hungry

Caterpillars eat leaves because it provides this the nutrients they need to grow. It is an easy source of food which can be readily broken down and digested.
