We (Native Americans) wore them for different reasons and it also varied on the tribe. A main reason for a Plains Native to wear one is that they earned or were awarded one for acts of bravery on a hunt or during a skirmish. Also different types, designs and alterations of feathers meant different things. For example in my tribe a black and white feather with a slit between the top and bottom meant you killed an enemy and took his scalp.

The plains Indians typically used the feather to shade the eyes from the sun especially before taking a shot. They also fabricated headdresses with feathers to denote rank in ceremonies.
