∙ 15y agoIt needs format because formatting is what makes the memory card available for use. If it wasn't formatted it wouldn't be able to write data on to the memory card.

∙ 14y agoMemory cards can get corrupted for many reasons, including removing it while the Gamecube/Wii is writing data to it, an error with the Gamecube/Wii, or an error with the card itself.
