Christians believe that God created the world because that is what they were taught as children. Unless they have a scientific bent, it is hard for many Christians to imagine that the universe came about without any divine assistance.

Christians have different perspectives on this question, depending on whether they believe all of The Bible or incorporate a belief in the infallibility of modern science into their thinking.

If they believe all of the Bible, then they think it was created out of nothing by almighty God, as stated in the Bible. Thus the reason for the world's existence is an act of almighty God, to bring it into existence according to His will.

If they are incorporating science into their thinking they would include things such as the Big Bang and evolutionary development into their thinking. In this latter group there are also included those who wish to have a combination of the two systems and so they think that God created the earth but that He used evolution somehow.

I could write pages and pages to answer this, but here is my simplified answer:
If you look at nature around you, isn't it beautiful?! The trees sway in the breeze, the birds sing by day, the sun sets the sky on fire at dusk, and the peaceful chirping of the crickets fills the air and the twinkling stars dot the skies by night. Isn't it hard to believe that just one random, unplanned bang created such order and BEAUTY?! How can chaos create order AND beauty? Chaos creates chaos.
Also, scientific theories still don't fully explain everything about the creation of the world, for is not the Law of Conservation of Mass "Matter cannot be created or destroyed"? If this is true, where did the matter that made Earth come from? What created the bang in the Big Bang theory?
?AnswerActually it is not just Christians who regard the universe as created by God. Christians get a bad press because some Christians (Creationists) cite Genesis 1 as the story of Creation as though it were fact. However Genesis was never meant to be taken literally - certainly most of the Jews didn't. Anf Jesus never mentions Adam, and Paul mentions him only occasionally, but also allegorically. In Hebrew Genesis is an allegorical poem (eg Adam means 'humankind') and not a statement of how the universe actually came about. To think otherwise would be like accepting CS lewis's Narnia books as an historically accurate account of a real land.

That said, though, new discoveries in cosmology have raised questions about the origin of the Universe. One such problem for the atheist is the Anthropic Principle. This is a discovery which deals with the fundamental constants of the universe set at the Big Bang. As one example, the Gravitational Constant G is a set figure all over the universe. However, if it was any larger, stars would form too quickly and would burn out before life could evolve on planets around them. If too small, then stars would never be hot enough to support life, or produce heavier elements. And the difference between 'too small' and 'too large' is a tiny percentage of the value. Coincidentally G is just the right amount to enable life to exist.

However coincidence goes out of the window when one realises than not just G is 'just right' but literally hundreds of fundamental constants like Boltzman's constant, Planck's constant, the mass/charge ratio of an electron and so on are just the right value for humanity to exist. One commentator once said 'the universe has bent over backwards to alllow human life to exist..... it's as if, at the Big Bang, the universe knew we were coming."

One can think of one or two constants hitting the mark as coincidence, but not hundreds. This strongly suggests design in the universe. And if there is design, there must be a designer.

For Christians this designer is best expressed by God as creator, and sustainer of the universe. One can cite scripture as evidence of God's creation (eg John 1), but in the story of Creation, as well as scripture backing up the idea of a Creator God, it is also backed up by hard scientific evidence in the Anthropic Principle

Christians think the world began with Adam and Eve, and the Garden of Eden. Even was created from a rib from Adam. They had no idea that they were naked until Even was influenced by the devil who was in the shape of a snake and convinced her to take a bite out of the forbidden fruit from the specific tree God pointed out. Even took a bite anyways and then realized she was naked. She then gave it to Adam to eat. After that God was furious when he found out what they had done. He banished them from the Garden of Eden and they went forth and replenished the Earth.

Biblical answer:

Genesis 1:27,28 - "And God went on to create the man in his image, in God's image he created him; male and female he created them. Further, God blessed them, and God said to them: Be fruitful and become many, fill the earth and subdue it, and have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and every living creature that is moving on the earth."

Isaiah 45:18 (From the NWT that uses the divine name) - "For this is what Jehovah says, The Creator of the heavens, the true God, The One who formed the earth, its Maker who firmly established it, Who did not create it simply for nothing, but formed it to be inhabited: 'I am Jehovah, and there is no one else'."

So God's purpose for the Earth, was it to be inhabited by righteous humans listening to him and who were to cultivate it as well as have the animals in subjection to them. The rebellion that took place in the Garden of Eden derailed that purpose for a time. The hope set out in the Bible is that some day the meek will inherit the Earth and God's original purpose will eventually be realized.
