On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked and destroyed the World Trade Center in New York City. There are many reasons for this attack; however, for the most part the terrorists wanted to strike a blow at the US which to them was a symbol of Western culture. They believed that their religion allowed for such an attack because they were radicalized Muslims who believed that the world should have one religion, Islam. As the US was (and is) the most powerful nation that represented Western values, the attack was seen by the attackers as being justified.

∙ 6y agoTerrorism is based on the idea that if you threaten people enough, they will eventually give in and either capitulate or give in to you, not wanting to risk the threat being acted on.
That is, hypothetically speaking. In real life, people do not simply give up for no reason. Terrorists then attack people, locations and objects that may convince others to agree with their ideals.
The reasons for terrorist attacks vary, depending on their ideologies and motivation.
The majority of terrorist attacks which have occured in recent years have been conducted by Islamist extremist groups, such as Al Queda.
The reasons behind the attacks come from two levels. The individuals who carry out the attacks are often indoctrinated with the belief that it is their duty to carry out God's will, and that they have a 'higher power' on their side.
The leaders of terrorist groups' reasons often stem from their own personal hatred of a foreign country or ideology.
This is on a very basic level, the real reasons why terrorist attacks have increased in frequency in recent times arguably stems from the power vacuums left in many countries after the Cold War and other complex political events...
