It disappeared in the North, because it did not suit the factory system.

In the South, it would only have survived if foreign countries had recognised the Confederacy.

If Lincoln had lost the Election of 1864, there would probably have been a negotiated peace, and slavery would have lasted a little longer.

But by the end of the century, other countries would have objected to trading with a slave-nation.
