The Amerindians were forced from their land to make room for farms and cities of the waves of European immigrants. Although treaties had guaranteed land to the native tribes, these were abrogated in favor of moving them to the Western frontiers, to lands that were considered less valuable. Because most Native Americans did not merge culturally with the larger society of the US, they were often deprived of rights and considerations. Many tribes still cling to their ancient tribal ways and beliefs as best they can.

The actual answer is rather long and some what complicated. A good place to start would be to Google "Trail of Tears" and "Andrew Jackson". Andrew Jackson removed native Americans in order to steal their land. These people were assimilated. They had houses and farms. They were only given half an hour to get out and their houses were burned down. Then they were sent on a forced march where many died. This was theft and murder.
